A short look at social for 2014

One of the fun parts about working with social media is that its all about change. What worked a month ago doesn’t always work today, and your plan for tackling a particularly medium at the beginning of 2014 might need to be readjusted by July because of shifts in technology, devices or rules on a site.

A few days ago, the team met and discussed some of the new or potential changes in social media that we see happening in 2014, and we wanted to share them with you. Here are a few of the things we discussed:

  • Visuals are going to continue to dominate, and even clients who weren’t using visuals heavily in 2013 need to utilize them in 2014.
  • Mobile-only channels (channels without a desktop component) such as Instagram and Vine, will continue to impact in 2014. Going into these channels will require changes in social workflow, because they often do not integrate with social media management systems like Hootsuite (yet).
  • On some channels, advertising will become a necessity rather than a nice to have, particularly for key messages

In future blog posts, we’ll look at three social apps that are already having an impact on users – Snapchat, Jelly, and Whisper. Want to see the basis of our discussion? Check out the Haikudeck below!
